Earthbound: Looking Back 10 Years Later

Wow, has it really already been ten years since we embarked on this crazy quest to adapt the entirety of Earthbound to film?  It’s kind of hard to believe.  If you had told Phil and me, way back on that chilly Saturday in October 2007 as we snuck out of the house to go to the park and film scenes from EarthBound Saga, that we would still be working on this project ten years later, we probably would have just said “Whoa, are you like, from the future?” and then blithely ignored you as we went on our merry way.

A lot has happened since the beginning, obviously.  Most of the original cast, originally in high school when we began, have since gone on to college and fabulously corporate jobs.  Two members of the cast have gotten married.  And in all that time, episodes of this long-winded project of filming Earthbound have continued to trickle out at a (somewhat) steady pace.

We had originally planned to release Episode 7 something much cooler on the ten-year birthday of this project, but short of having something much cooler ready to release, we decided to dig way back into the EARTHBOUND ARCHIVES to present you guys with some pretty neat-o old stuff.  Since the Earthbound Part One DVD has been out of print for quite awhile now, we thought now was the appropriate time to finally release that DVD’s bonus features onto the Internet for all to enjoy.  To that end, we present you with PSI Documentary α, a 17-minute documentary on the making of the first three episodes, as well as 2009-era commentary tracks from the same first three episodes.  For those who don’t know the full story of how/why we created these episodes in the first place, we highly recommend watching the documentary first, as we do a much clearer job of explaining that than we do on the commentary tracks.  Enjoy!!!

Harry Potter and the Extended Universe

Surprise!  After a five-year hiatus, the Ridgway Films gang has returned to the wizarding world of Harry Potter for our fourth parody short film.  But wait – the last one was called The Final Video!  What are we doing making another one?  Well, in case you haven’t noticed, reboots, remakes, and spinoffs are all the rage these days, so why not join the bandwagon?

In Harry Potter and the Extended Universe, five years after their last adventure, Harry Potter and best friend Ron discover that their franchise is being rebooted.

In late 2016, we decided that it had been too long since a classic Ridgway Films collaborative project, so we started talking about possible ideas.  A fourth Harry Potter short was something we had wanted to do for years, but it was always a matter of waiting for the right idea and the right time.  Inspired by various recent trends in blockbuster filmmaking over the past couple of years, we came up with the meta idea of Harry Potter getting rebooted within the story, with a host of strange side effects from such an in-universe reboot.  We’re all really happy with how this new project turned out, so be sure to leave some comments and let us know what you think!

On a technical note, this is our first film to be shot in full 4K quality!  So if you have the screen for it, make sure to crank up those YouTube quality settings to the max!

Rolemancing Season 1

In the intervening years since peak activity here at Ridgway Films, a lot of us have moved on to individual projects. Robert Thomas (probably best known for Ron in the Harry Potter videos and Lucky in the Earthbound series) has been hard at work on various film projects at Wichita State University (check out their body of work here!)  Their latest project, Rolemancing, is a mini-series that follows a group of D’n’Ders on various wacky adventures. Featuring Robert himself (as well as a small bit of visual effects work from Ridgway Films), the entirety of Season 1 has been uploaded to YouTube and is definitely worth checking out!

Threepcast Episode 18: Blue Warehouse Thing with Future Doors

The first Threepcast episode of 2017 is here!  In this episode, the Ridgways return to the world of Zero Escape to play the second game in the trilogy – Virtue’s Last Reward.  We compare the game extensively to its predecessor (Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors), we discuss the effectiveness of the game’s new mechanics, and we spend a lot of time trying to untangle the rather complicated time travel that this game throws at you.

Next time, we will be reviewing Minecraft:  Story Mode.
